Too Much Skin?

August 26, 2010

Fox News refused to run a Cacique Intimates “plus-size” lingerie ad three times before they caved to pressure from people who realize that most women are not a size 2.

Why did Fox and American Idol refuse to air the ad?

“They told me it was too much skin.  The Victoria’s Secret girls can flaunt around their panties all day long. But when there’s a bigger woman with a little bit extra, they snipped it out immediately,” said plus-size model Ashley Graham.

I think it’s pretty obvious that Fox’s refusal has nothing to do with “family values” or what is or isn’t “appropriate.”

And here’s the ad, which shows a surprising lack of skin for something that reportedly had “too much skin.”

Thanks for this – it’s nice to see someone outside the fat blogosphere drawing attention to this b*s. The message the ad’s refusal sends is that the definition of “acceptable bodies” is even narrower than we might have thought.

By the way, I’ve really been enjoying your blog since it popped up on Freshly Pressed and I grabbed the RSS. Have you heard of Threadbared? I’m sure, considering your interest in the sartorial, you’d enjoy it.

Thanks for reading! And for the Threadbared suggestion – I hadn’t heard of them before, but I’ve definitely enjoyed reading through it this afternoon. …for everyone else, here’s their link:
