Piercing Problems

August 24, 2010

What’s the most valuable thing you can learn at school?  …at Parma High School in Ohio it seems that looking-the-part is more valuable that anything else…(as in: more valuable than going to school for 13 years!)

Tessa Ellis, a high school senior was denied her diploma as she walked across the stage at graduation because she had a nose piercing!!

“I walked across the stage trying to hold back tears and then after I went to go get my diploma and they wouldn’t give it to me because of my nose ring,” said Ellis.

A fellow Parma student said, “She earned it, you can’t just take that away from a person just because of how they look or what you’re wearing.”   Sadly, at this point all sorts of judgments can be officially made based only on how someone looks in most of the US…  (Michigan is the only state that has laws on appearance discrimination.)

Those high school administrators need to crawl out of their cave and realize that while a nose piercing is a hole in a student’s head, knowledge will not fall out of it.

Isn’t everybody pierced now? I can’t believe this is still an issue…. even in Ohio. (And I grew up there, so I’m allowed to say that). Unbelievable.
