Let Girls Be Girls!

August 10, 2010

Suri Cruise is wearing high heels.  She’s four.

Gucci just launched a children’s clothing line.

Miss America has a children’s clothing line.

…so a group of concerned parents, Mums, to be specific, created the “Let Girls Be Girls” campaign through Mumsnet.  One of the main goals of the campaign is to raise awareness about how clothing sold by retailers can affect children’s sexualized image.  Mumsnet sent a petition to a fairly long list of big-box retailers (mainly in the UK) urging them to not carry retail items that prematurely sexualize children.

Check out their site to see which retailers have committed to “Let Girls Be Girls.”

Awesome! Thanks for posting. I seen pre-teens walking around with provocative statements plastered on their butts — their PARENTS are with them — and I just can’t stop shaking my head.

Did you happen to catch the toddler pageant episode on Kathy Griffin’s “My Life on the D List?” Easy targets, but it was fairly cathartic to watch. She actually nailed the sexualization- of -children angle.

Sorry, I meant to say, “I HAVE seen children….”
