Busted for Beads

July 22, 2010

In May, a seventh grade student, Raymond Hosier, was suspended for wearing rosary beads to school.  Hosier wore his rosary in memory of his brother who died holding rosary beads after a car accident.

The Schenectady City School District has a ban against gang-related paraphernalia and symbols, which include rosaries.  Unfortunately for the school district, not allowing Hosier to wear his rosary was a violation of his first amendment rights.

As his mother says, “…Raymond has learned so much about his First Amendment rights through this process — it’s actually been a wonderful experience for him.”

Amazing how much he’s learned during a two week suspension!
