High Heels for 3 Year-Olds?

July 20, 2010

I doubt I’d take my parenting cues from Tom Cruise or Katie Holmes, but obviously since they thought it was a good idea to dress their 4-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise, in heels, lots of other people have thought it was a good idea too.  Prompting several stores to carry heels for girls as young as 3.

But before we get too far, lets not blame the shoes.  Not that I think people shouldn’t be upset about kiddie heels, but the funny thing about clothing is that the actual clothing item doesn’t mean anything, we’ve just learned that heels “make women sexier,” so the idea of seeing a 4-year old wearing them is kind of disturbing.  If we lived in a society where you had to gain the maturity and age to walk around barefoot then we’d feel much different about kids running around with bare feet!  The root of it is that it’s not the heels that are sexualizing young girls, it’s how people view and then respond to a child wearing them.

But at this point it’s a lot more difficult to change everyone’s perspective on clothing, and much easier just to convince parents not dress their children in items that prematurely sexualize them.  Because, yes, there is something deeply creepy about that photo of Suri Cruise.

…not to mention that her Achilles tendons will have a hard time developing correctly…

Ugly shoes. Don’t they care about her physical health? You can’t run or climb on the playground well in heels (which children especially need to be doing) and she is begging for a twisted ankle. And the sexualization…weirdos.
