Are Teachers Smart Enough to Dress Themselves?

June 3, 2010

Seven teachers at Singur Golap-Mohini Balika Vidyalaya, a government-run school in India took their dress code to court.  The teachers were asked to wear white saris with a colored border to class.

The Calcutta court ruled that teachers were “educated” and “responsible” enough to be able to choose their own appropriate clothing.  (Well, phew!  That is a relief.)

This has been an issue in India for a while.  In 2009 students and parents locked 8 teachers from Sarisha Ramakrishna Mission Sarada Vidya Mandir in a room for over 10 hours because the teachers didn’t wear white saris to work.

A teacher from a Calcutta college said: “Whether a teacher is good or bad does not depend on her choice of clothes. The authorities, instead of keeping a close watch on what a teacher is wearing, must pay attention to her teaching skills.”
