Even Roman Goddesses Have Dress Codes

May 10, 2010

Virginia has a new state seal, all thanks to Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (and Virtus’s apparent exhibitions…)

Virginia’s original seal, designed by a signer of the Declaration of Independence, showed the goddess of virtue, Virtus, with Tyranny pinned under her foot.  This is all great symbolism, except that her left breast was bare.  (Never mind that a bare breast represents Amazons and warriors in classical Greek art…)  Human immaturity obviously trumps culture… at least in this case.

Ken Cuccinelli had new lapel pins made, because we all know how distracted politicians are by breasts.
