Tesco: A Grocery Store With A Dress Code

April 12, 2010

Tesco, a grocery chain in the UK, banned patrons from wearing pajamas and bikinis while shopping.  I know a lot of people do their grocery shopping in PJs, but bikinis?  Really? Is that a big problem?

Tesco claims that it’s dress code was sparked by customer complaints.  Apparently, customers were “embarrassed” seeing other people shopping in their pajama pants.  Aren’t pajama pants just cotton pants with a cheerful pattern?  I mean, I often see people wearing things I wouldn’t be caught dead in, but I don’t really feel embarrassed for them, in fact I’d describe it more of a swelling feeling of superior good taste.  Can’t say I really mind that.

Thankfully, Tesco recognizes that they have to draw the line somewhere.  Afterall, they are just a grocery store chain…  “We’re not a nightclub with a strict dress code, and jeans and trainers are of course more than welcome.”  Well phew.  Because who wants to do their grocery shopping in a sequined mini shirt and stilettos?
