What Do Clothes Have To Do With It?

March 31, 2010

In the age of mass childhood obesity (20% of American’s kids are obese), it would seem that many elementary schools would want to promote sports.  Not so in Kingsburg, CA, where the Superintendent of the Kingsburg Elementary Charter School District made a dress code banning sports clothing.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The idea behind the ban is that the kids who wear the jerseys are more rowdy on the playground than kids who don’t wear sports gear.  …so the obvious question is do jerseys make you rowdy, or do rowdy people wear jerseys?  We could go around and around on this one (if you were that sort of person), but to me it sounds like a lazy school district with a bullying problem.  And why get to the root of the problem if you can make neat little rules from the comfort of your office without having to roll up your sleeves on the playground.
